Bird Flu: Human Infection

Bird flu is a disease caused by a specific type of avian (bird) influenza virus, the so-called H5N1 virus. This virus was first discovered in birds in China in 1997, and since then has infected 125 people in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia, killing 64 of them. It is spread by infected migratory birds (including wild ducks and geese) to domestic poultry (primarily chickens, ducks, and turkeys), and then to humans. Some infected people have developed abnormal clotting profiles resulting in excessive bleeding—which was a frequent clinical symptom in the deadly so-called Spanish influenza of 1918-19, which killed more than 100 million people worldwide. Indeed, bird flu shares a number of disturbing characteristics with the 1918-19 influenza virus. These two viruses have, in fact, recently been shown to be similar genetically. And in a recent laboratory experiment with mice, the 1918-19 virus was found to produce 39,000 times more viruses four days after infection than the regular seasonal human flu strain. The 1918-19 virus killed 100 percent of the mice that were infected with it, compared to none of the mice infected with the regular flu strain. With a current “case fatality rate,” or death rate of approximately 50 percent in humans, bird flu is obviously also a very deadly disease. There are only a few reports in the medical literature describing the clinical features of bird flu in humans. The clinical spectrum of H5N1 infection ranges from asymptomatic infection—where the person doesn’t even know he or she is infected—to fatal pneumonia and multiple organ failure. Some infected individuals develop liver or kidney dysfunction, and there were two children who died from the virus that came to medical attention because of diarrhea and seizures related to encephalitis (infection of the brain). However, the most common presentation is one of fever, cough, and trouble breathing. Approximately 70 percent of patients also have diarrhea, and a few patients have had only gastrointestinal symptoms (such as stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea) and no breathing problems. Deaths have generally been in normally healthy people. The first report in the medical literature of deaths from bird flu was on 12 patients living in Hong Kong. Their median age was nine years, with a range of one to 60 years. All presented with fever, and eight had symptoms or signs of upper-respiratory infections (five had clinical and X-ray evidence of pneumonia when first diagnosed). Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, were present in eight patients. There were a total of five deaths (one died with Reye’s syndrome, which is associated with taking aspirin in children). In a study of 10 patients in Vietnam with laboratory-confirmed avian influenza (H5N1), the mean age of the patients was 13.7 years. For eight of the patients, there was a clear history of either direct handling of poultry (chickens or ducks) or exposure to sick poultry in the week before the onset of illness. All presented in January 2004 with cough, shortness of breath, and fever, and seven had diarrhea; none had myalgia (muscle aches)—which is often found in the regular seasonal flu. Notably, oseltamivir (Tamiflu) was administered to five patients, four of whom died (treatment was probably started too late for the medication to be effective—it must be given within 48 hours after onset of symptoms to be effective). In total, eight of the patients died, for an 80 percent case fatality rate or death rate. As is apparent from the descriptions above, the presenting symptoms of individuals with bird flu are very similar to the symptoms of the normal seasonal flu. Infections caused by either the bird-flu virus (H5N1) or the seasonal influenza virus can be completely asymptomatic—that is, cause no symptoms at all. Fever, cough, malaise (feeling ill), and gastrointestinal symptoms are common to both infections. Excessive bleeding occurs only with bird flu, but currently this symptom doesn’t appear to be common. Difficulty breathing is more common with severe cases of bird flu, not seasonal flu. Runny nose and sneezing are found only with colds (or allergies). The cough in either type of infection is what is referred to in medicine as “nonproductive”—meaning there is no sputum brought up when coughing, or if any sputum is brought up, it is white in color. This type of cough is characteristic of upper respiratory viral infections. As either type of infection progresses or worsens, tissues may be damaged, disrupting the normal structure and function of the infected cells. This in turn may allow bacteria to grow and also cause damage. When this happens following a viral infection, it is referred to as a “secondary” bacterial infection. When this occurs, the color of the sputum characteristically turns yellow or green. If this happens, antibiotics are indicated to treat the bacterial infection. (Antibiotics are not indicated in the treatment of viral infections, because they don’t work.) It is safe to assume that during a bird-flu pandemic, most individuals who become infected with the bird-flu virus will either be asymptomatic—having no symptoms—or their illness will not be severe enough to require hospitalization. The small percentage who do become seriously ill will have to be hospitalized, and treated with either of the two antiviral agents available, oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir (Relenza). A smaller subset of that group will develop life-threatening complications such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which requires treatment with a mechanical ventilator, a respirator. Some individuals may develop other serious complications such as liver failure, kidney failure, neurological problems—such as seizures, paralysis, psychiatric problems such as delirium or psychosis, or bleeding problems. However, it is reasonable to predict that most people infected with the virus will not die and will not have significant residual symptoms, although a small percentage will. What Is Lung Cancer And Who Can Get It?

Abnormal cell growth in either one or both of the lungs is the simple answer to the question, “What is lung cancer?” In healthy individuals, the cells within the lungs go about their business duplicating at a normal rate and turning into more and more lung tissues. The lungs continue to function properly and all is well. But in damaged lungs, this rate of cell duplication becomes uncharacteristically fast yet new lung tissue fails to develop. These damaged (cancerous) cells begin to clump together and ultimately turn into cancerous tumors. Eventually, the tumors begin to interfere with the impacted lung’s ability to function normally and that is when the full impact of the disease known as lung cancer begins to be noticed. Interestingly, although it usually takes many years for lung cancer to develop, the cells begin to take on abnormal characteristics almost immediately upon being exposed to cigarette smoke or the other environmental contaminants that can cause trouble in the lungs such as radon, asbestos, coal, air pollution, and even second-hand smoke. Lung cancer can strike anyone regardless of gender, age or race. Even though it is more likely to strike those who are or who have been a smoker, lung cancer can develop in those who have never taken up this habit. Lung cancer in non-smokers is very rare, occurring in only about 10% of the cases, meaning that in almost 90% of the lung cancer cases, cigarette smoking is the instigator. Why is that so? The primary purpose of the lungs is to breathe in air. The lungs remove the oxygen from this air and push it out into the blood where it can travel around the body as needed. Because the air we breathe is not always pure – it’s filled with dust, dirt, and other types of pollutants – the upper part of the lung system was designed to clean it before allowing it to enter deeper into the lungs. In the case of smokers, the carcinogens in cigarette smoke can break down the lung’s cleansing capabilities and as a result, dirty air and the contaminants within cigarette smoke continue to freely enter into the lungs. It is the absence of this cleansing capability that ultimately causes the cells inside the lungs to function abnormally. Besides being the #1 cause of cancer death in the United States, lung cancer is unfortunately so far a disease that has no cure. Small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer are the two types of lung cancer that can develop. Eighty percent of the lung cancer cases are the slower-moving non-small cell type. The problem with this type of lung cancer is that it often spreads to other parts of the body. Sophisticated lung scans are generally the way most tumors are detected, but unfortunately, such scans are not part of routine medical care. However, the U.S. has decided to place all of its chips on an experimental vaccine, a vaccine that is based on an early seed of bird flu, which most experts agree has already mutated into something quite different, and that means when bird flu gets here, it may not respond to any vaccine. The most astonishing fact about this new bird flu virus is how much science doesn’t know about it. The mystery remains of how people get infected. Is it by breathing the air near feces? By eating duck meat? By touching? Nobody really knows. Meanwhile, health authorities continue to slaughter infected fowl, experiment with genetic variations, and run computer simulations on panic control. Coeliac Disease is something which affects many people but which is not widely understood or discussed. It is a medical condition which affects the gut and digestive system of the sufferer and which people can be genetically pre-disposed to. The disease often runs in families, due to the genetic predisposition of the condition. However, it can be brought on through environmental factors at any point in one’s life. Coeliac Disease is most prevalent in British people, with 1 in 100 diagnosed. Italy is the next country with a high prevalence rate of 1 in 250 people. Those living in other countries but of British or Italian descent can find themselves more likely to develop it due to the genetic link. The condition is very rare in those of African, Chinese or Japanese descent. When an individual who is pre-disposed to Coeliac Disease eats a product containing gluten, damage is done to the lining of their small intestine. The body sees gluten as harmful and so attacks it and the villi, or lining of the intestine, which are shaped like small fingers, become flattened and this results in scar tissue being formed. This scar tissue is then not able to absorb nutrients and goodness from food, such as vital vitamins and minerals. The disturbance to the digestive system can also result in bowel problems, such as diarrhoea in addition to malnutrition. Gluten is a protein and a common ingredient in such food stuffs as wheat, barley, rye and oats. Unfortunately for sufferers there is no medicine available to relieve their symptoms. The only way to reduce, and possibly eliminate, the symptoms is to ensure that they follow a strict gluten-free diet for the rest of their life. For the majority of patients a gluten-free diet will prevent further damage to the intestines and give them the opportunity to heal to an extent, if not wholly, dependent on the length of time they have been eating a normal diet before switching to gluten-free. Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis – «is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating weakness and fatiguability.» Myasthenia Gravis is a latin term meaning «grave muscle weekness». This disease is famous as an autoimmune disorder. Being so widely known, doctors have researched and found out many of the disease mechanisms and symptoms. In almost all cases, the diagnosed will suffer from massive muscle fatigue when participating in any sort of physical activity. When at rest, however, this symptom will not be evident. Myasthenia Gravis does not favour any particular muscle to fatigue. In fact it has been known to happen to muscles that chew, control eyelid and eye movement, talk, control facial expressions, swallowing, and even sometimes the muscles that control limb and neck movement, as well as breathing. Most people at least suffer from muscle fatigue when swallowing, making facial expressions, and moving their eyes and eyelids. This particular disease is somewhat difficult to diagnose. The symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis are alike many other nuerological disorders, and even normal occurences. If all symptoms of Myasthenia are present then it is clear, but if not, even testing can be very inaccurate. Testing for this disorder is restricted to the eye muscles, and is only 50% accurate, at best. Luckily, if the symptoms are minor, and the disease is not able to be diagnosed, it really isnt to bad. Muscle fatigue is something that people have to live with if they are simply regular gym-goers. If the symptoms are fierce, and the disease is diagnosed, then treatment can begin immediatly.

What Is The Avian Flu – Also Known As The Bird Flu?

The Avian flu is a virus carried by birds and spread through their feces and other secretions. Those most at risk are people who come into contact with infected birds. Of the people who have been infected, many are from families that keep chickens around the home. There have been no signs of the Bird Flu in the United States as yet, and the virus is not easily transmitted from birds to humans. However, once confined to Asia, the Bird Flu has now been identified in other countries. Those that have been diagnosed with the Bird Flu have been in close contact with the infected poultry. A trial vaccine is being developed for the Bird Flu, however since the virus is constantly changing there will have to be a vaccine created to the specific strain that is spreading. Bird flu in poultry does not pose any food safety risk because it is unlikely a sick chicken would be slaughtered for consumption, and thoroughly cooking meat and eggs would kill the virus. Dr Judith Hilton, the head of microbiological safety at Britain’s Food Standards Agency, said salmonella poses more of a risk to consumers than bird flu. She added that people generally get flu through the respiratory system, not from what they eat. Dr. Hilton advises thorough cooking of poultry meat and eggs. If you cook your poultry and your eggs thoroughly, you would get rid of any viruses present. Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection, most commonly affects the lungs. Tuberculosis can also affect the central nervous system, lymphatic system, circulatory system, genitourinary system, bones and joints. Often Called TB for short, tuberculosis is the most common major infectious disease today. With that title the virus is infecting two billion people which is approximately one-third of the world’s population. Nine million new cases of active disease annually, resulting in two million deaths. Most of these cases and deaths are in developing countries. Ninenty percent of those that are infected have asymptomatic latent TB infection (LTBI). This is alot of numbers: There is a ten percent chance that in the lifetime of LTBI that it will progress to active TB disease. This active disease if left untreated, will kill more than fifty percent of its victims. All of these numbers maketuberculosisone of the top three infectious killing diseases in the world. HIV/AIDS kills 3 million people each year, TB kills 2 million, and malaria kills 1 million. Tuberculosis is caused by a slow-growing aerobic bacterium that divides every 16 to 20 hours. This division is extremely slow when compared to other bacteria, which tend to have division times that are measured in minutes. In many patients the infection of Tuberculosis waxes and wanes. Treatment with appropriate antibiotics kills bacteria and allows healing to take place. Areas where Tuberculosis has affected will eventually be replaced by scar tissue. A complete medical evaluation for Tuberculosis includes a medical history, a physical examination, a tuberculin skin test, a serological test, a chest X-ray, and microbiologic smears and cultures. This is quite an extensive procedure as you can see, but if you look at the numbers above it is a necessary process.

Genital warts is a very contagious disease that is sexually transmitted. The disease is caused by various variants of the Human papillomavirus. Usuall these are the HPV 6 and the HPV 11. it is spread during oral, genital, or anal sex with someone who is infected with the virus. Approximately two-thirds of people who have anyone single sexual contact with someone who is infected with genital warts will develop warts. The disease normally develops within three months of contact. Women will develop the warts on the outside and inside of the vagina, on the entrance to the uterus, and sometimes around the anus. Although Genital warts are equally prevalent in men as in women, the symptoms of the disease are generally much less obvious. When a male is infected with the disease the wards are normally seen on the tip of the penis. They also may be found on the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, and around the anus. It is very rare forgenital wartsto develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has been involved in oral sex with an infected partner. With that said though it is still out there! Genital warts will usually exist in clusters and can be very tiny. They can also spread into large masses in the genital or anal area. Improving Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease where white blood cells suddenly attack healthy tissues, specifically joints and cartilage. There are a few ways to help ease the symptoms, depending on which stage of the disease you are in. If you are in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis there is a new disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) which has done an excellent job in controlling symptoms. It works best in the initial stages, so if you suspect you may have rheumatoid arthritis, see your doctor as soon as possible. There are other options if you are in later stages of rheumatoid arthritis. These are also helpful if you are still in early stages. One is to use anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. This does a great job reducing pain and inflammation. However, these have side effects including heart problems and gastrointestinal bleeding. You can also use acetaminophen for your rheumatoid arthritis, which does not have these side effects. When symptoms are mild, moderate exercising including stretching, weight lifting, and aerobics ease rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Be sure to rest when your joints flare up as this would just add strain to your aching joints. Stretching is important because it increases flexibility and is easy enough to do at any age. When stretching, stop when you feel mild discomfort and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Then repeat 3 to 5 times. Weight lifting also improves flexibility as well as strength and balance. Barbells are easy, convenient, and inexpensive. Remember to stretch before lifting any weights. Start with 3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions. If you would like you can start with no weights at all (such as going leg lifts for rheumatoid arthritis in the knees), then add weights when you can. Lift the weights slowly and evenly to not damage the cartilage. Some other popular forms of exercise for rheumatoid arthritis are aqua therapy and Tai Chi. Be sure to find an actual therapist as they have specific exercises they do for arthritis patients. Aerobics instructors may push to far and do further damage. Tai Chi has no long term studies proving its effectiveness, but due to testimonials from patients who have taken Tai Chi, the Arthritis Foundation began offering the class. Remember to always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. Some other ways to relieve rheumatoid arthritis pain are to lose weight to take additional pressure off joints, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, using heat or ice, and possibly using devices such as a cane, brace, or splint. Crohn’s Disease is sometimes difficult to identify, as the symptoms mimic many other gastrointestinal disorders. However, once you recognize an inflammatory bowel disease, specific testing can be completed to determine if Crohn’s is an issue. The primary symptom associated with Crohn’s Disease is diarrhea. The inflammation of the intestines experienced as a result of the disorder causes excessive amounts of salt and water to be produced that the body can not reabsorb. The body, in turn, attempts to dispose of the excess fluid causing diarrhea. Intestinal contractions also contribute to this process. The severity of diarrhea will vary by individual, from mildly loose occurring slightly more frequently to extremely watery occurring multiple times a day. Another sign of Crohn’s is bleeding of the intestines, typically seen in the stool of the sufferer. This is caused by the swelling and inflammation of the intestinal wall, which becomes damaged as waste passes through the body. Depending on the severity, this can be of major concern, causing anemia and other complications. Ranging in color from bright red to darker shades, blood in one’s stool should cause concern. Abdominal pain and cramping are also common with Crohn’s Disease, as inflammation worsens. The swelling itself can be painful; however, the passage of waste through inflamed channels causes more discomfort. The longer inflammation lasts, the walls of the intestinal tract become thick with scar tissue, which worsens that matter. Outbreaks of bird flu (H5N1) among poultry are ongoing in a number of countries. While bird flu does not usually infect people, human cases of the bird flu infection associated with these outbreaks have been reported. Most of these cases have occurred from direct or close contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces. Distressingly, a few rare cases of human-to-human spread of bird flu (H5N1 also) have occurred, though transmission has not continued beyond one person. Because all influenza viruses have the ability to change, many scientists are concerned that the bird flu virus could mutate and infect humans so as to spread easily from one person to another. The following paragraph is taken from a statement of the CDC: Because these viruses do not commonly infect humans, there is little or no immune protection against them in the human population and an influenza pandemic … could begin. Experts …are watching the H5N1 situation in Asia and Europe very closely and are preparing for the possibility that the virus may begin to spread more easily from person to person. Did you notice the cause for alarm? It says, “Because these viruses do not commonly infect humans, there is little or no immune protection against them.” Since we don’t have prior immunities to H5N1 strains, we are unprotected, allegedly. Often, we don’t have specific antibodies against many diseases…until they contact us. But, then again, that is the reason we have immune systems. Our immune system, if healthy, protects us against viruses – include H5N1 – until it can create antibodies to kill them. The problem associated with bird flu is simple: the people and the poultry that get infected with it have compromised immune systems. If you pursue the issue, you will read that the deadliest disease in history is widely regarded as the Spanish Flu epidemic which killed 40 million people in just months. Scientists now believe that the epidemic was a bird flu pandemic. In other words, the virus came from birds and a virus similar to this one – called the “H5N1” (a form of bird flu virus). Its origins? Most scientists agree that it originated in Asia, as this one. The current bird flu (H5N1) is infecting and spreading throughout the poultry industry in Asia. But, there is an initial – and rather nagging – question. Why do these bird flu strains so often originate in Asia as this one and others, including the Spanish Flu? Answer: Simply put…and here is a key to understanding how to deal with bird flu (H5N1) – poultry farms are absolutely filthy. The stench from such farms, especially those throughout Asia, can be picked up a mile away. Those farms are packed with animals that are weak with compromised, weakened, immune systems. Let these two phrases sink in together: bird flu and weakened immune systems. What about the Spanish Flu? It followed World War I. That War brought death and destruction. But, what about those who survived it? They faced the bird flu. Why? The War brought untold trials in the war torn nations, weakening immune system response in millions. But, why did that bird flu afflict the United States as well? The War brought extreme stress to the soldiers who fought the War, who were now returning from active duty. The bird flu also brought horrible grief to millions who had already experienced loss of loved ones…or, lived with the uncertainties of loss for months. Then there’s the stress of caring for the wounded, crippled, maimed, depressed or otherwise incapacitated. War is so stressful that it brings plague with it. The plague is not just a result of the conditions of war. The stress upon people brought on by war goes far beyond other stresses in life. Certainly, immune system retardation coupled with harsh post-war conditions increases the stress upon life ….opening the door to immune deficiency and, thus, bird flu viruses… The horrible conditions of Asian and European poultry farms and their millions of animals with weakened immune systems is the key to this potential pandemic too. The result is “weakened immune systems and bird flu”. Why aren’t all the birds dying? Because of the rapid spread and highly dangerous nature of the bird flu to birds, millions of flocks have been destroyed throughout the afflicted countries. However, that “remedy” is not working because migratory birds are carrying the bird flu to distant lands, thus spreading its contagion. Interestingly, the migratory birds are not dying from H5N1 like the chickens. Why? Because their immune systems are much stronger, we are told by scientists. Let that one sink in too: bird flu is not killing those birds so readily which have strong immune systems. Hum…bird flu and immune systems…Could be we have something here. What Eye Problems Result From Albinism

Albinism refers to a group of inherited conditions. People with albinism have little or no pigment in the eyes, skin and hair. Besides looking different, which may cause social problems, albinos also have various impairments. In the most severe form of albinism (called oculocutaneous albinism), those affected appear to have hair, skin, and iris color that are white or pink as well as vision defects. This article mainly concentrates on the eye problems resulting from albinism. The eyes need melanin pigment to develop normal vision. Because of that people with albinism have impaired vision. The skin also needs pigment for protection from sun damage so albinos sunburn themselves very easily and have increased risk of getting skin cancer. Less common types of albinism can also involve other problems. Albinism often results extreme farsightedness or nearsightedness and astigmatism. Sight can be improved with glasses, however, normal or near normal vision is unusual even when glasses are worn. Other common eye impairments include nystagmus and strabismus. Nystagmus is an involuntary movement of the eyes back and forth. One way how some people cope with this problem is by using a head tilt. This decreases the movement and may improve vision. For nystagmus treatment eye muscle surgery is also an option however this does not help in all cases. Strabismus means that the eyes do not fixate and track together. In some cases the alignment of the eyes improves with the wearing of glasses. Young children are sometimes thought to use the non preferred eye more. This is done by patching the other eye. However treatment cannot correct the improper routing of the nerves to the brain. Photophobia also is a frequent disorder. In the case of photophobia the eyes are very sensitive to the sun. This can be coped with by wearing dark classes when exposed to the sun. Albinism treatment mainly aims to ease symptoms and depends on the extent of the disorder. The skin and eyes must be protected from the sun. Sunglasses (UV protected) may relieve photophobia. Sunburn risk can be reduced by avoiding the sun, by using sunscreens and covering completely with clothing when exposed to sun. Sunscreens should have a high SPF (sun protection factor).

Some restrictions can easily avert a heart disease from happening. Staying away from fast food and junk food as well as greasy, high cholesterol laden foods can greatly decrease the risk of having a heart disease. Not only that, they can also prevent other diseases from happening. Fast foods are processed foods that have various harmful chemicals that contribute greatly to the development of a heart disease. Then there is smoking. Not only does smoking contribute highly to a good number of diseases, they are actually one of the highest contributors. Stopping smoking now gives your heart the chance to recoup whatever lost health it has given up. It doesn’t matter how long you have been hooked to smoking cigarettes and cigars, if you love yourself and your family, you have to give it up. It’s never late to give your health and your heart a chance to improve. Another obvious prevention is to exercise. Give the old ticker a workout. Keeping your body in shape can eliminate the fats deposited in it clearing up the passageway of your blood. Not only would you be preventing the heart disease you could also improve the way you feel and the way you look. You can do a variety of exercises that can fit in your schedule. Euphorbia Prostata Cures Hemorrhoids

Many suffer from it silently, without telling anyone about it. Piles, or swollen blood vessels in and around the anus and lower rectum that stretch under pressure symptomized most commonly by bleeding, is still considered a taboo subject. With fast-paced progress in medical science, however, piles is now being recognized more judiciously and scientifically at par with other medical problems. Whereas on one hand, awareness on the ailment, and on the fact that treatments are in fact available to alleviate it has increased, on the other hand, it has also led to the mushrooming of quacks making tall claims without any substance. Piles or hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. According to available data, about half of the population has hemorrhoids by the age of 50. Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women. The pressure of the fetus in the abdomen, as well as hormonal changes, cause the hemorrhoidal vessels to enlarge. These vessels are also placed under severe pressure during childbirth. For most women, however, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are a temporary problem. Recent researches in India have now established that the herb, Euphorbia prostata, is very effective in treating piles and anal fissures. In a recent study conducted at the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Punjab University, Chandigarh, as many as 32,000 patients of piles and anal fissures have been reported to have benefited from oral (capsule/tablet) and topical (cream/gel) forms of Euphorbia prostata. No significant side effects were reported. Following the studies initiated by BestOnHealth, an SBU of Delhi-based pharma major, Panacea Biotec, and the encouraging results of their succeeding monolithic study on 32,000 patients, the company in association with the Punjab University has recently patented the technology for extracting flavonoids from Euphorbia prostata, vide European patent no. EP 0868914. Based on this technology, BestonHealth has introduced India’s first hundred per cent integrated and natural piles management system called “Thank God”. The company has patented the product worldwide and plans to introduce it soon in Europe, Latin America and other parts of Asia. This integrated kit combines the benefits of flavonoids with those of naturally occurring ispaghulla husk, and comprises of a relief capsules, topical anytime cream, isphaghulla husk, a pain and relief cream, and an applicator. One of the major ingredients in Euphorbia prostata is flavonoids. Flavonoids have aroused considerable interest recently because of their potential beneficial effects on human health– they have been reported to have antiviral, anti-allergic, anti-platelet, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and antioxidant activities. In two other similar but more specific studies initiated in 2001 by BestOnHealth under the supervision of Dr. M.P. Arora of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Dr. V. K. Malik of Maulana Azad Medical College, 118 cases of bleeding hemorrhoids were administered Euphorbia prostata-based flavonoids at effective doses and were examined later at 5 and 10 days for improvement in symptoms related to piles. The objective of the study was to explore and certify the benefits of flavonoids extracted from Euphorbia prostata in piles management. The symptoms of piles pertained to anal discomfort and pain, discharge of mucous from anus (proctorhhea) and inflammation of the rectum (proctitis). At the end of the eight-month trial, the physicians observed a statistical difference in the cure rate profile among the patients selected. It was observed that patients who were given flavonoids achieved an overwhelmingly significant cure and relief from symptoms of bleeding piles when compared to patients in the controlled group (on placebo). It is now established that flavonoids extracted from Euphorbia prostata reduce bleeding, pain and inflammation associated with piles, and reduce itching. They also promote efficient wound healing. Euphorbia prostata has been found effective in the entire efficacy parameters of bleeding hemorrhoids and show minimal side-effects, with high tolerance among patients. Experts further suggest that these flavonoids work best in piles management when combined with other natural remedies like ispaghulla husk etc., and such an integrated approach also significantly reduces the risk of a relapse (recurrence) in piles. Experts opine that such a rationally formulated combination therapy seems to have an exponential and positive remedial effect, and may speed up recovery from the symptoms of piles. This would be a big relief for the many patients hitherto hiding their distressing anguish and suffering incessantly yet silently. The pain, it seems, is finally over.

Meningitis and Encephalitis: What’s the Difference?

«Meningitis» and «encephalitis» are two words that pop onto most people’s radar screens from time to time, and usually in some scary context, like hearing of a cluster of cases in their child’s school, or reading media reports of epidemics occurring nationally or internationally. While most people understand that these words mean there is some sort of infection of the nervous system, other distinctions and implications are often left unstated and, as a result, can be vague or confusing. The basic concepts are built into the words themselves. Starting at the ends of the words and working forwards, «-itis» is the medical suffix meaning inflammation. Although it’s possible for inflammation to occur without an infection being present, as a practical matter, in most cases of meningitis or encephalitis the inflammation is indeed due to an infection. The next step in understanding these concepts is to analyze the first parts of the words. «Mening-» refers to the meninges which are the membranous coverings of the brain and spinal cord. So «meningitis» means inflammation or infection of these membranous coverings. By contrast, «encephal-» refers to the encephalon or brain (originating from the Greek word «enkephalos»), so «encephalitis» means inflammation or infection of the brain itself. Although no case of meningitis or encephalitis is trivial, depending on the particulars, some cases end up as temporary illnesses from which there is full recovery, while others can be severely damaging or even lethal. In a nutshell, cases of meningitis caused by viruses are usually associated with good outcomes (even without treatment), while cases of meningitis involving bacteria are very serious and require emergency treatment with powerful antibiotics. All cases of encephalitis–usually caused by viruses and not by bacteria–are serious, and antiviral treatment is available for some of the viruses involved, but not all. Most cases of either meningitis or encephalitis start fairly abruptly, sometimes following an obvious infection elsewhere in the body and sometimes not. As with most infections, a fever is usually present in meningitis or encephalitis, but is not necessarily striking. In both cases the patient feels miserable in general and often complains of pain in the head, neck, or both. Because encephalitis involves infection of the brain itself, symptoms of altered brain function–like confusion or decreased alertness–are usually present, while in cases of meningitis the patient is initially alert and, though understandably distracted by pain and misery, still in command of their mental processes. In either case, prompt medical assessment is important. In both meningitis and encephalitis a lumbar puncture (also known as a spinal tap) is usually crucial in detecting the presence of an infection, identifying the infecting organism, and guiding successful treatment. While an imaging test like a CT scan or an MRI scan is often included as part of the evaluation, they do not replace the lumbar puncture in identifying the essential features of the infection. A lumbar puncture is usually performed with the patient lying on one side, curled into a fetal position. The doctor preps and drapes the patient’s lower back to create a sterile field in which to work. After numbing the skin of the lower back the doctor inserts a needle in the middle of the spine, puncturing the meninges. In the lower back there is no spinal cord, so there is no risk of puncturing it, too. Watery fluid is collected into tubes as it drips out of the back of the needle. Then the needle is withdrawn. This watery fluid is called CSF–short for cerebrospinal fluid–and because it resides within the meninges (and outside of the brain and spinal cord) it holds some of the keys to diagnosing the infection. Laboratory personnel can perform several tests on the fluid right away, like measuring the concentrations of red and white blood cells, as well as the concentrations of protein and sugar. An increase in concentration of white blood («pus») cells and an increase in protein concentration are expected findings when the meninges are infected by either bacteria or viruses, with the changes more pronounced in bacterial infections than in viral infections. Reductions in sugar concentration are common in bacterial but not viral infections. Other tests on the CSF involve inherent delays, like trying to grow bacteria from the CSF in Petri dishes or other culture media. In truth, cases of encephalitis also usually involve inflammation of the meninges, so a stickler for linguistic accuracy could rightly maintain that they should be called «meningo-encephalitis» to reflect the involvements of both meninges and brain. But in common usage, the «meningo-» prefix is often dropped. So because CSF changes occur in cases of both meningitis and encephalitis, the main clinical feature that separates the two is the patient’s mental state, with confusion or decreased level of consciousness making a strong case for encephalitis. Once the CSF has been collected, the doctor can begin treatment without risk of obscuring the fluid’s diagnostic features. So long as there is any likelihood of bacterial infection, the doctor administers one or more antibiotic drugs, usually via an intravenous catheter. If the clinical findings could also be interpreted as due to a treatable virus, the doctor concurrently administers an antiviral drug. With the seriousness of these illnesses, the benefits of over-treatment exceed its risks, and once the dust settles and the diagnosis is clarified, needless treatment can be discontinued without harm. HIV/AIDS – Prevent It!

AIDS. The very sound of the word scares some, and makes other cringe. How did we let it get so far? There is no cure for very few diseases, and aids is one of them. Yet we still have unprotected sex, and we still share dirty needles. Come on! Granted, HIV/AIDS will never be a thing of the past, but we can do better in making the condition less common. HIV/AIDS kills. In 2004, it was responsible for 3.5 million deaths globally. Thats not even the worst of it. 6.4 million people newly contracted the virus in the same year! Instead of diminishing the deadly condition, we are multiplying it. This needs to stop. It’s as if 3.5 million wasn’t enough dead in 2004, so we decided to boost the numbers for 2005. What are we thinking?! Mothers can share AIDS with their infants during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, and there is no way to stop it short of not becoming pregnant. But here is the list of preventable HIV/AIDS transmissions: – Penetrative oral, vaginal, or anal sex (Unprotected) – Blood transfusion – In health care settings – Drug injection So if these ways are all preventable, why is HIV/AIDS still such a major problem? The human race needs to wise up, stop sharing needles, screen blood transfusions, and USE CONDOMS. Let’s beat AIDS before it beats us.

Avian Flu: Do You Want the Good News or the Bad News?

Avian Flu: The bad news first Well, it’s flu season again. Only this time, we hear everyone talking about avian flu…the Super flu which is expected to wreck havoc across our land in the not so distant months. So what is avian flu? Avian flu is bird flu. Yes, you read that right, «Avian flu is bird flu.» And why might that be such bad news? If you pursue the news much, you will read that the deadliest disease in history is widely regarded as the Spanish Flu epidemic which killed 40 million people in just months. Scientists now believe the epidemic was an avian flu pandemic. In other words, the virus came from birds – it is believed – and a virus similar to this one – called the «H5N1″ (a form of avian flu virus). Its origins? Most scientists agree it originated in Asia, as this one. Flu comes every season. It comes in one of two forms, Type A or Type B influenza. Type A is the more potent of these kinds of flu, and avian flu is Type A. These strains kill. The current avian flu bug is infecting and spreading throughout the poultry industry in Asia. Why so often in Asia? Simply put…and here is a key to understanding how to deal with avian flu – poultry farms are absolutely filthy. The stench from such farms, especially those throughout Asia, can be detected a mile away. Those farms are packed with animals which are weak with compromised, weakened, immune systems. Let these two phrases sink in together: avian flu and weakened immune systems. Whether we are dealing with the aftermath of the horrible conditions and weakened immune systems of millions who survived World War I or the horrible conditions of Asian and European poultry farms and their millions of animals with weakened immune systems, the key to this potential pandemic is «weakened immune systems and avian flu». Because of the rapid spread and highly dangerous nature of the avian flu to birds, millions of flocks have been destroyed throughout the afflicted countries. However, that is simply not working because migratory birds are carrying the avian flu to distant lands, thus spreading its contagion. Interestingly, the migratory birds are not dying like the chickens. Why? Because their immune systems are much stronger, we are told by scientists. Let that one sink in too: avian flu is not killing those animals so readily which have strong immune systems. Hum…avian flu and immune systems…Could be we have something here. Incidentally, there have been only about a hundred deaths from avian flu worldwide. It is almost impossible for avian flu to make the transition from bird to human easily. Avian Flu: Now for the really bad news Of course, as soon as there is the slightest danger – avian flu or otherwise – our government jumps into high gear to infect every one of us, if possible, with its antiviral drug program against the slightest hint of avian flu. To date, everyone of the influenza drugs have proven worthless…or worse, against avian flu or any other kind of flu. Note this statement from the former Chief Vaccine Control at the Federal Food and Drug Administration: There is no evidence that any influenza vaccine thus far developed is effective in preventing or mitigating any attack of influenza. The producers of these vaccines know that they are worthless, but they go on selling them anyway. –Dr. J. Anthony Morris I wonder if this will apply to the alleged avian flu «antidote». Note: The last few decades have seen a dramatic shift in fatalities from seasonal flu (some of which are avian flu). Researchers now know the increase in the population does NOT account for the doubling of the seasonal average death toll from flu (avian flu or otherwise). Less than 20,000 were dying per year for decades. But, since the advent of the flu shot, averages of over 40,000 people per year have been dying. Why? One suggestion is a combination of two factors: the continued impairment of the immune system of the average American as witnessed by the multitude of epidemic diseases among us (not present in appreciable amounts in previous decades). The second factor follows below… (like the second Horseman of the Apocalypse). Let’s see…one thing we do know about flu vaccines. They are not proven to work… No, two things we know…Yes, yes. They can kill. Just as surely as the avian flu can kill. Many authorities believe the flu shot actually weakens the immune system…ah, there it is again…the immune system weakened. Why is that? Let’s see. The ingredients in the flu vaccine (remember this when dealing with the avian flu) include: » Formaldehyde, you know…embalming fluid known to cause cancer. » Aluminum, the very metal related to Alzheimer’s disease, cancers of numerous types and traumatic seizures. » Carbolic Acid: a terribly caustic poison. » Ethylene Glycol: You will definitely need this fluid this winter, but please only use it as anti-freeze for your car, as it was designed to be used originally. » Mercury: This is present in the vaccine ingredient called thimerosol. This is a known medical crippler and killer. It kills brain cells and immune cells and is linked to childhood brain and nervous diseases because of its use in VACCINES. » Vaccines for use in avian flu are grown on virus strains developed from pus-laden animal tissue mixed with the above mentioned deadly chemicals. Is it any wonder the drug companies involved sought to be legally protected from law suits by those who might use these drugs against avian flu? Forgive my skepticism, but I have seen from the inside of the medical/drug establishment, the fanatical zeal to make money as a first priority… Been there, opposed that. Avian flu treatment will not be any different. Don’t count on the Hippocratic Oath to protect you from avian flu. There is big money in these drugs. Billions. And it is always suspicious when a drug company seeks lawsuit immunity (hum, appropriate wording here) BEFORE THE FACT (before its use against avian flu!) Avian Flu: Now for the good news (finally). Avian flu was not in view when this following statement was made. However, read it carefully with avian flu in mind. In Congressional testimony concerning the potential of bio-terrorism attack upon the United States, Dr. H. Reginald McDaniel stated, In instances of unusual, epidemic, or virulent infectious agent exposure, glyconutrient supplementation has been found effective for enhancing general immune functions and defense. When supplied at higher levels than available in nature, sugars needed for cellular synthesis can take innate defense systems to a much higher level that are effective against infectious agents. In other words, if we were attacked by an enemy with bio weapons – such as avian flu – we could find protection with glyconutrition. This is a powerful, non-prescriptive antidote possibility against avian flu. Glyconutrition enhances the immune system’s natural defenses so powerfully that cancers, flu, and other UNDER ACTIVE IMMUNE DISORDERS can be stopped. The evidence is already in place. There is no guesswork here. Avian flu is flu, Type A, precisely the kind of flu glyconutrition is designed to offset. Glyconutrition is effective – presumably against avian flu too – and has no side effects. It is a food substance, proven to be vital for human survival. There are no less than four Nobel Prizes to substantiate the presence and human need for glyconutrition. There is an abundance of evidence showing its effectiveness against all kinds of disease, including flu. It doesn’t attack the flu directly. It strengthens the immune defenses – killer T cells and others – and they kill the tumors, flu, herpes simplex, shingles, strep, TB, bacterial infections, cancers, parasitic diseases… Quite a list of killers thus killed. So… Guess what I am going to take to protect my family this year against avian flu…if it develops?

A Variola Story

Let me start by introducing myself; my name is Variola. It is a latin name, so most people just call me «Smallpox». I’m not going to lie to you, I am a horrible friend. I tend to keep you all to myself during our time together. I am highly contagious and only like to hang around with humans, as other mammals scare me. I can attack you in 2 forms: Variola major and Variola minor. Variola major owns my more devilish qualities. In this form i tend to kill about 35% of those i get tied up with. Now, if me and you are to become friends, you should probably request that i give you my brighter side, Variola minor. This way, you only have a 1% chance of our friendship ending in death – to you. In the 20th century, I was responsible for up to 500 million fatalities. If, after my wrath, you survive, i make sure that i have left my mark. You’ll be very lucky to forget about our little fling, as in most cases i leave you with scars known as «potmarks». And i’m merciless when it comes to that. i dont mind leaving them anywhere and everywhere on your body, including your face. If you are even luckier, I will simply leave you blind so that you do not have to look at your scarred body in the mirror everyday. I do this through «corneal ulcerations», which is not in the least bit enjoyable for you. After telling you this story my message should be clear; STAY AWAY! Types of Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a disease taking on many forms which feature inflammation of the liver. The cause is depended on the prognosis and on the symptoms shown. Certain forms of hepatitis are unable to reveal many signs or symptoms and are only noticeable when the longstanding inflammation has led to the replacement of liver cells by connective tissue. General symptoms of hepatitis are noticed by fever, enlarged liver, abdominal pain, and jaundice (icterus). Viral infections are the cause of most acute Hepatitis. Hepatitis comes in 7 not so delicious flavours: Hepatitis A, B, C, D – Agent (which requires the presence of the hepatitis B virus to form), Hepatitis E, F, and G. None of these are very yummy, and should be avoided at all costs. The most common of the 7 is Hepatitis A. It is transmitted through the orofecal route, or in other words, contaminated food. This one is the easiest to contract, but it does not reach a chronic stage, so the body is able to build up an immunity against it by creating antibodies. An excellent preventative measure is to get a Hepatitis A vaccination. This will prevent infection of the virus. Hepatitis has a close brother – Hepatitis B. This evil twin is also very easy to contract. you can get it through blood, tattoos, sexually, and you can even inherit it from your mother when you are born. Hep. B can be acute, however, some peoples’ bodies are unable to produce antibodies against it, thus turning an acute virus into a chronic one. How to Cope with Anticipatory Grief

Anticipatory grief is the name given to the mix of emotions experienced when we are living in expectation of loss and grieving because of it. Anticipatory Grief is particularly relevant to those who have received a terminal diagnosis and for those who love and care for them. Terminal diagnosis changes the very structure of our existence, takes away our control and our ability to hope and plan for the future. When someone we love is given a terminal illness, we become painfully aware of the fragility of life and may even fear for our own mortality. Living in expectation of death, causes us to experience many of the symptoms and emotions of the grief suffered when a loved one has actually died, including; shock, anger, denial, physical and emotional pain, helplessness and sorrow. Depression is common and changes in eating, sleeping and bowel habits may also occur. Prognosis increases our turmoil; it is inevitable that we begin counting down the days to the estimated time of demise and see the dawn of each day as bringing us closer to it. Some may feel a sense of surreal ness and an inability to fit back into the pattern of life prior to diagnosis, this often intensified by the reaction of friends and acquaintances, who may be dealing with their own shock and dismay at the news and not knowing what to do or say, avoid us. It may be some time before we can truly accept that our loved one is dying and during this time we may experience alternate periods of acceptance and denial. Often, necessity brings about acceptance for the Carer as they need to make decisions regarding the best options available for the care of their loved ones. The patient however, may choose not to accept the prognosis and it is important for the carer to recognise and support their need to live in hope of a cure. Hope is paramount to quality of life for their loved one and may even contribute to their longer survival. Whether our grief is anticipatory or grief due to the death of a loved one, there is a very real need to talk to someone about the roller coaster of emotions we are experiencing. This however is not always easy to do, due to a number of reasons which may include; trying to remain strong for the patient, trying to remain strong for the children, trying to put on a brave face for other family members and friends. Counselling, though readily available, is resisted by many, who believe that no one could possibly understand what they are feeling, nor do anything about the outcome. Speaking from my own experience of anticipatory grief due my husband’s terminal illness, I initially had these feelings and it was with some trepidation that I went to my first counselling session. Upon hearing my story, the counselling cried, further strengthening my opinion that she could not possibly help me. I was mistaken; after a few visits I began to see the benefit of these sessions and looked forward to seeing her each week. Here, for a short time at least, I could stop acting as if everything was okay – when nothing was okay, here I could take off my brave face and let my defences down. The only trouble with counselling is that it may not always be available when you need it. I highly recommend keeping a personal diary for these occasions. During the two years of my husbands terminal illness, my diary was without a doubt, my strongest coping tool, I wrote in it daily, often in the form of poetry, pouring my anger, my fear and my heartache on to the pages. Periodically, I would read back through it and through this I came to know myself very well – later I could see my strength coming through. Celiac Disease: What You Should Know

Celiac disease is a genetically transmitted ailment in which gluten in the diet causes damage to the small intestine preventing the celiac sufferer from absorbing nutrients from the normal digestion process. These proteins are found in all forms of mainstream and other related products. Such as durum semolina, spelt, and related grains such as rye, barley, and oats. Damage to the small intestine is caused by a reaction to the ingestion of gluten.

Celiac disease causes the villi (the tiny hair-like projections in the small intestine)to shrink and ultimately disappear. This is the vicious reaction to celiac disease. Damaged villi interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. If left untreated, damage to the small intestine can be life threatening, posing an increased risk of many disorders.

For those suffering the effects of celiac disease, they will also suffer a host of related symptoms including: anemia, calcium deficiencies and vitamin deficiencies such as B12, B6. Often, they will have other allergies.

Among the more common celiac disease symptoms, abdominal cramps and bloating, diarrhea and constipation are all celiac disease symptoms. Often, they experience fatigue, weakness, and irritability.

At this time, the only treatment available for celiac disease is a lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. For nearly all celiac disease sufferers, when gluten is completely removed from the diet, the small intestine will begin to heal and general health will improve. It is important that the celiac disease sufferer learn to read labels. If you’re not sure about a food or ingredient, stay away and learn to identify those ingredients that may contain gluten. You must become aware of gluten hiding in some not so obvious foods such as deli meats, soups, hard candies, soy sauce, even salad dressings. When in doubt, stay away! You must be very diligent if you expect to see healing.

Gluten is also often used as a binder in prescription medicines. Again ask your doctor about gtluten in medications.

You should probably stay away from alcohol altogether. Beer MUST be avoided, but alcohol that’s been distilled is believed to be OK. Consult your doctor

Sometimes gluten products are added to alcohols and vinegars after the distilling process and should be avoided entirely. Malt vinegars are not distilled and are not gluten-free.
